Theory
Rudimentary Theory
When a student learns to read music, it is in essence another language. With each language exists a set of guidelines that need to be learned. Basic theoretical knowledge is provided to students in their regular music lessons. However, a more thorough training in music theory is provided aside from their study of a musical instrument. After the completion of certain course material, students may wish to complete examinations to solidify their knowledge, and progress through graded programs, such as those provided by the Royal Conservatory of Music.
Advanced Theory
Ultimately, students desire to supplement their learning of already composed material with compositions of their own. Through the study of advanced theory, including Harmony and Counterpoint, students learn different ways to compose music, and gain the knowledge to compile their knowledge into works of musical art. They also learn to give in-depth analysis of composed works, gaining an understanding of why certain composers composed the way they did. From here students find themselves exploring the world of improvisation. Understanding the concepts of harmony allows them to elaborate on musical material to further their enjoyment of music.
